With the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) executives resigning on Tuesday, the Interim Management Committee (IMC) is now by default the chief governing body for cricket in Guyana.
How the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), will approach the Guyana situation going forward is unclear, given their condemnations on the IMC in recent times.
However Chairman of the IMC, Clive Hubert Lloyd in speaking to the media on Tuesday afternoon at his office in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport said that the IMC will be going ahead with its tasks that were mandated since its formation on December 23rd, 2011.
These tasks were fixing the GCB constitution; dealing with the allegations of financial impropriety; the implementation of a broad-based Cricket Development Programme and the drafting of a piece of legislation to submit to parliament, which will make the GCB a ‘legal entity’.
The IMC for Guyana’s cricket headed by Lloyd held a series of stakeholders meetings from February 11th – 19th, 2012. There were eight such meetings in the following areas: Georgetown, West Coast Demerara, East Bank Demerara, Essequibo Coast, East Coast Demerara, Parika, Linden and New Amsterdam. The meetings were generally well attended with lively discussions on various cricket issues.
Recently the IMC disclosed a five-page document articulating its findings during its nationwide cricket consultation tour. Lloyd was asked to give an update on what the IMC will be doing now that they have released this document, given that it is basically three months to go before the IMC’s own stipulated deadline to complete its tasks.
“The first thing I would look to now is try to get that constitution situation in order. This would be relayed to the Cricket Development Committee. Once they and also the general cricket public all view it and accept it in good faith – we can move on quickly to having a new election, so that a new board can take over so that IMC will be over within that timeline.”
Lloyd also stated he was glad the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) has now joined the IMC for this final phase of the process.
The ECB along with the Raj Sing faction of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) and the now resigned GCB were the bodies that had showed resistance to the IMC in recent months, while the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the Bissondyal Singh DCB faction had endorsed the IMC.
Finally, Lloyd, the former distinguished West Indies captain, addressed rumours circulating about his position as the Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee.
“As far as I know I’m still the Chairman, I haven’t heard anything from the ICC stating otherwise,” said Lloyd.
According to reports on cricinfo.com, the ICC concluded a two-day meeting in Dubai yesterday and that media release stated with regards to Lloyd that, “The ICC Board will consider nominations for the role of chairman of the committee as Clive Lloyd’s term has expired.”
