Guyana Power and Light says that around 8.19 am today an out-of-control minibus struck one of its transformer structures on Main and New Market streets causing a system shutdown.
A GPL release said that extensive damage was caused to the network, including two transformers, and this resulted in the shutdown.
GPL said it was able to repower the first set of customers at around 9.20 am while the other customers regained power at 11.02 am.
“The incident reinforced the need for parties to be cautious and exercise extreme caution when using the road ways. In addition, the prompt reporting of all accidents involving GPL’s network will assist in the speedy resolution of problems caused by such accidents”, the power company said.
In recent weeks, bad weather and falling poles have caused numerous outages and other problems for the utility.
