At about 4:30 pm yesterday, Rhonda Da Silva, a 24-year-old pregnant woman drowned after the boat she was travelling in capsized in the Berbice River, in the vicinity of the Kwakwani crushing plant, the Government Information Agency reported.
GINA said that reports are that the boat carrying Da Silva, her husband and daughter capsized near a bauxite tug and barge. The woman’s husband and daughter were rescued by workers of the Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc., however, she could not have been rescued in time and drowned. The body has since been recovered and is at the Kwakwani mortuary.
The tug’s captain and crew are with the police assisting with investigations, GINA said.
Officials of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) are expected to visit the accident site today while Minister of Human Services and Social Security Jennifer Webster has been informed of the mishap.
GINA said that officials of the bauxite company have already met with the relatives of the deceased to render help.
