RUSAL pickup overboard: This pickup was part of a fleet of vehicles that was being transported into RUSAL’s Aroaima, Berbice location yesterday when the driver said that he was blinded by dust from another vehicle which had passed him. He lost control and careened off the fair weather road just off Ituni and landed in the gully. The section of the road is very narrow and doesn’t have sufficient passage for two vehicles at the same time. It was not clear how many persons were in the vehicle at the time. The driver escaped with minor injuries and was seen holding on to his back. Several workers were on the scene as they were escorting the fleet to the mines. The pickup had no licence plate at the time. The fleet included two large fuel tankers, two Triple 7 dump trucks, one electrical truck, one hauler and 3 Hilux pickups, including the one that crashed. Residents of Retrieve and parents of students of the Mackenzie High and Regma Primary schools are calling on RUSAL to somehow deal with a large quantity of oil which spilled from one of the oil tankers, covering Purple Heart Street, a main thoroughfare for students of the two schools.
