DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, CMC – Bermuda’s recent woes continued when they lost the opening match of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers to Denmark by seven wickets yesterday.
Playing at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Bermuda managed only 116 for seven off their 20 overs after wining the toss and opting to bat.
They lost the experienced opener Lionel Cann to the second ball of the innings without a run on the board but Dion Stovell (56) and captain David Hemp (36) put on a patient 74 from 78 balls for the second wicket.
Stovell struck four fours and two sixes off 52 balls while Hemp required 44 balls for his knock that included six fours.
In reply, Freddie Klokker (50) and Shehzad Ahmed (11) gave Denmark a solid start of 42 from 38 balls.
Bermuda were back in it, however, when they hit back claiming two wickets for three runs in the space of seven balls to leave Denmark on 45 for two in the eighth over.
Klokker, who faced 41 balls and hit four fours, then partnered with Rizwan Mahmood whose 47 came from 49 balls and included three fours and three sixes, to post 60 for the third wicket and put the game beyond Bermuda.
Ireland, meanwhile, coached by former West Indies all-rounder Phil Simmons, suffered a four-run defeat to Namibia.
