The Guyana for the upcoming Under 16 Davis Cup and Fed Cup tennis tournaments will be outfitted with uniforms provided by corporate giants Ansa McAl.
According to a press release from the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA), the company has assisted in outfitting all seven members of the traveling party including the two coaches.
The company, earlier this month, handed over the sponsorship cheque to the GTA, the release added.
The company, distributors of Smalta, said it was excited to support the development of tennis in Guyana, the release added.
Brand Representative for Smalta, Anjeta Hinds, spoke of the company’s delight to be given the opportunity to be part of the venture.
“It’s always a pleasure to assist with a positive venture in Guyana that helps young people develop their talent,” Hinds stated.
“It is the hope that the event is well received and Smalta will continue to lend support in any way possible,” she added.
The team will depart Saturday for the March 16 – 24 tournament in the Dominican Republic.
The Guyana team will be comprised of Gavin Lewis, Daniel Lopes and Khalif Gobin on the boys side and females Aretta Dey and Nicola Ramdyhan.
Much will be expected of Ramdyhan and Dey who, last year, won the girls’ Under 14 doubles of the ITF St Vincent junior tennis tournament.
Dey also captured gold in the girls’ singles while Ramdyhan copped silver.
The players will first have to go through the qualifying events which is expected to attract some of the best players from North and Central America and the Caribbean.
The five players will be accompanied by ITF Level 2 coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan and ITF Level 1 coach Jeremy Miller. The players have been undergoing rigorous training over the last two months under Ramdyhan and Miller. The players were also privileged to undergo training with Regional ITF Officer and coach Anthony Jeremiah over the weekend at the GBTI Recreational Centre.
The level of competition, at the event, is expected to be very high as many of the game’s all-time greats have played in the competition in the past before progressing into the senior ranks, the release said.
