Father, 3 sons charged over last month’s piracy attacks

A father and his three sons were last Friday charged under the Hijacking and Piracy Act after an engine they had in their possession was positively identified as one stolen during a piracy attack last month.

Dawanand Jagdai, 49, of Canefield, Leguan, Essequibo; Parmanand Jagdai, 25; Suresh Jagdai, 24; and Narendra Jagdai, 17, were remanded to prison by Magistrate Leron Daly when they appeared at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court.

Police said in a press release yesterday that on March 3 acting on information received, police ranks conducted a search on the home of Dawanand Jagdai where they found two 15 hp outboard motor engines. He could not produce a receipt for one of the engines and the receipt for the other appeared to be forged.

Consequently, resulting from further investigations, the man and his sons were charged with unlawful possession of the engines. They appeared before Magistrate Daly at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on March 6 and were remanded to prison until March 29.

The release stated that on March 9, one of the fishermen who were victims of the recent pirate attacks at the mouth of the Pomeroon River positively identified one of the engines to be his property that was stolen during the incident.

As a result of this the quartet was further charged with robbery under arms under the Hijacking and Piracy Act. They will return to court on April 30 in relation to this latest matter.
