The recent resignation of PPP/C Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom) Commissioner Moen Mc Doom will see the position being filled by Attorney Jaya Manickchand.
Manickchand, the younger sister of Minister of Education Pryia Manickchand is tipped to take up the position tomorrow after being sworn in before President Donald Ramotar a PPP/C told this newspaper.
Further, a senior Gecom official told Stabroek News that Mc Doom, who has served as commissioner for close to 20 years, quite recently had indicated to the commission that he would have been resigning. “At one of the meetings the guy came in and just casually said that it would have been his last day,” the source said. The reason for his resignation was not known and efforts to contact him for a comment proved futile.
The younger Manickchand will be the lone woman in the six-member commission chaired by Dr Steve Surujbally. However, minus Mcdoom, there are only four other members since the recent death of deputy mayor Robert Williams. The soon-to-be Gecom commissioner is also a Social Worker and Caribbean-trained lawyer.
