Ansa McAl, Digicel help bring stranded winning female basketball team home

REDjet’s abrupt suspension of flights had left Guyana’s victorious women’s basketball team stranded in Antigua, but thanks to two cooperate entities they will be home today to celebrate.

Although unsure of their return to Guyana the women’s team on Sunday evening trounced Concerned Parents Teachers Students Association’s (CPTSA) Wing team 72-32 at the 12th Annual Gillian Brazier Basketball Championship.

Speaking with Stabroek News last evening President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), David Patterson, said assistance was sought from Ansa McAl and Digicel who willingly collaborated and provided funds making possible the return of the 13-member team today aboard Liat. He said that since all of the players would not be able to travel together seven would be on Liat’s morning flight and the others in the afternoon.

He said that Caribbean Airlines, on hearing of the team’s dilemma, approached the GABF with a return package but the flights had already been booked on Liat.

He expressed thanks to all of the companies that assisted as he stated how pleased he was of the team’s victory given the mental pressure they were under.

Patterson said he had tried reaching Minister of Culture Youth and Sports Frank Anthony for intervention to get the victorious team back home but his efforts proved futile.

The GABF president said the team had taken advantage of REDjet’s low fares and the sudden suspension of flights came as a shock.
