Defending GFF Super League champions Alpha “The Hammer” United had to dig deep to come away victorious 2-1 over Rosignol United as several on and off the field incidents marred other matches in the League over the weekend.
Playing at the GFC ground, Alpha United found themselves a goal down when Delroy Fraser scored his third goal in the competition in the 17th minute for Rosignol who held on to the lead throughout the first half.
Alpha however bounced back into contention with two second half goals scored by Manasseh Primo in the 57th minute and in the 77th minute off the boot of Clive Andries.
The Uitvlugt Community Centre proved to be a venue of much drama as BK International Western Tigers swamped West Demerara side Seawall 3-0, while the other home team Den Amstel held Pele of Georgetown to a 1-1 draw.
Daniel Wilson opened the account for Tigers in the 20th minute then Captain Dwayne Alli converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute after a Seawall defender deliberately handled the ball in the penalty area.
The third goal was scored by Orwin Hilton in the 86th minute to give the Tigers a convincing win.
In the second match of the double header card, referee Stanley Lancaster was forced to issue two red cards to Pele players in a game marred by spectator problem.
Pele scored first when Jamal Carter netted under controversial circumstances when the referee overruled a signaled from the assistant referee for an off-side in the 33rd minute.
Leon Roberts of Pele was given marching orders a few minutes for stamping an opponent.
Den Amstel equalized in time added on 92nd when Kester Jacobs scored much to the delight of the home fans but referee Lancaster was forced to issue a second red card to Pele goalkeeper Devin Carter who became abusive.
Apart from the on field drama, players from Seawall and Pele are alleging that personal items were stolen from the changing rooms.
Tournament Coordinator Lawrence Griffith has indicated that the Guyana Football Federation may be forced to bar the venue from future matches due to the changing room incidents and crowd encroachment.
Rain wreaked havoc in Linden, forcing the abandonment of one of two matches scheduled for the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
The match between Milerock and Victoria Kings was called off and will be rescheduled.
However, in the lone game possible, home side Amelia’s Ward scored a 2-0 win over Buxton United of East Coast Demerara.
Carlos Grant scored for Amelia’s Ward in the 40th minute before Matthew White converted in the 65th minute.
