Cricket teams in the Berbice River district will participate in a 20/20 tournament sponsored by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTYSC) and Food for the Poor (Guy) Incorporated in conjunction with the Berbice Cricket Board.
RHTYSC Secretary/CEO and Chairman of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster last Friday at the Scots Church Annexe Building disclosed that this development will assist in raising the standard of the game.
He said that Berbice River teams have been neglected in the past due to the distance away from the mainland,
Foster expressed the view that this situation would be corrected in the future.
The BCB will also send in some of its coaches later in the year to host a two-day cricket academy.
Executive Director of Food for the Poor (Guy) Inc Leon Davis expressed the hope that the T20 tournament would be successful and pledged his organization’s future assistance to the development of cricket in the Berbice River area.
President of both the (RHTYSC) and Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Keith Foster stated that he was pleased that the Berbice River area cricketers would finally get some cricket to play and that they would seek other ways to develop the game in the area even further.
Representative of the Berbice River Cricket Association (BRCA) Floyd Benjamin hailed the launching of the tournament as a red letter day for the area as the players were hungry of competitions and he praised the BCB, RHTYSC and Food for the Poor (Guy) Inc for organizing and sponsoring the 20/20 tournament.
Teams taking part in the tournament are Weronie, Ebini, Kimbia, Sand Hills and Fort Nassau. Food for the Poor Executive Director Leon Davis handed over a quantity of cricket balls, a trophy and $200 000.00 worth of cricket gears and other items for the tournament to Benjamin.
