Leonaka Natasha Johnson’s fiancé was yesterday charged with murdering her and dumping her body in a canal near her Nismes, West Bank Demerara home.
David Johnson, 23, of Lot 45 Norton Street, was arraigned on the capital charge at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
The charge read that between March 15 and March 17, hemurdered Johnson. He was not required to plead and was subsequently remanded to prison until April 2 by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
As the charge was read to the accused, he stood in the docks, clad in a blue striped t-shirt, with his head bowed.
At around 6 am on Saturday, the body of the 20-year-old Johnson, who was also called ‘Tasha,’ of 17 River View, Nismes, was discovered floating in the nearby canal by persons in the area. The woman’s relatives said that she was last seen in the company of a policeman last Thursday night. They said that after she did not return home, they became worried as she did not sleep out.
The policeman was later ruled out as a suspect by investigators.
Johnson, relatives said, was engaged to be married but was having some minor issues with her fiancé.
