The Linden/Georgetown basketball rivalry will be renewed today when the second Kevin Lawrence Memorial basketball classic tips off at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall tonight from 19:00hrs.
The rivalry that has been missing from the basketball fraternity for a year is set to be an intriguing match-up because it will pit the best 12 players from both towns against each other.
Moreover, both the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) and the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) are now putting themselves back on stream.
With Linden already completing their league which was sponsored by the Trophy Stall, the competitive spirit is at an all-time high while their rivals are now in the midst of their own league which will only create a better competitive atmosphere when the action tips off.
Meanwhile last year at the staging of the inaugural event many flocked the CASH to witness Ravens defeating Pacesetters.
However, the organizers from Ravens Basketball Club believe that the game can bring basketball back to a respectable level.
Therefore, players familiar with the rivalry were recruited to be a part of the anticipated game. The Georgetown team will consist of Ryan Gullen, Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai, Ryan Stephney, Royston Siland and Stephon Gillis. Travis Burnett, Jaime Meyers, Kerwin Blades, Hodyah Stewart and Jason Squires are the other players who will make up the city team which will be coached by the experienced Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan.
The Linden team will be spearheaded by National Captain Steve Neils and CBC teammate Shane ‘Big Kane’ Webster and will be coached by Abdullah ‘Zico’ Hamid.
The team will also include the flashy Chris Williams, junior national point guard Marlon Pollydore, Orin ‘Six-Head’ Rose, Alister Webster, Quincy Jones, Trevor Profitt, Keon Cameron, Harold Adams, Kevin Joseph, Orlando Glasgow and Marvin Hartman.
It was also revealed by the organizers of the event that while the players will play to pay tribute to the late, former Ravens shooting marksman Kevin Lawrence who died from injuries sustained in a car accident in Suriname, they are also eager to get the basketball rivalry back on track.
The organizers are also encouraging persons to come out and support the event, especially since it is in remembrance of a great national player.
