A Guyanese woman managed to smuggle over six pounds of cocaine through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timheri but was later nabbed at the JFK Airport, in New York.
Denice Clarke appeared before Magistrate Judge Ramon E. Reyes Jr on a charge of importing 2.128 kilogrammes of cocaine into the US. She was released on US$100,000 bail.
According to Special Agent Gerard McMahon, in court papers seen by this newspaper, on March 25, Clarke arrived at the John F Kennedy Airport on Caribbean Airlines flight 524 from Guyana. She was selected for a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) examination and presented for inspection one black ‘Premium’ carry-on suitcase.
“During questioning, the defendant Denice Clarke seemed very nervous and was very talkative. During an inspection of her suitcase, a CBP officer observed that the top of the suitcase felt unusually heavy. A probe of the suitcase revealed a white-powdery substance, which field-tested positive for the presence of cocaine,” the US agent wrote.
