A Rupununi man who admitted assaulting his wife was ordered by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to pay a fine of $15,000 or serve two weeks in prison and she also put him on a bond to keep the peace for one year.
Carlton Ng-a-fook of St Ignatius, Rupununi, pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife Lynette Ng-a-fook at their home last Sunday.
The defendant told the court that he had slapped the woman because she did not listen to him and did not want to take his advice.
However, he was admonished by the magistrate who told him that no man has the right to hit a woman.
The man and his wife were at home when his wife sent their son to the shop to buy bread.
The shop was closed and the child returned without the item. Ng-a-fook became annoyed and began abusing his wife and dealt her several slaps.
The matter was reported and he was arrested and charged.
