Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) mauled Airbenders 6-0 but Hikers maintain the lead in the John Fernandes Insurance Second Division Hockey league.
In Monday’s lone game, GCC went on a goal scoring spree against the hapless Airbenders (The National women’s squad) who had little answer to the onslaught at the GCC ground, Bourda.
The home team got off to a riveting start when Mark Sargeant slotted home a scorcher past Airbenders goalkeeper Alysa Xavier in the fourth minute.
Patrick Edghill then increased the lead to 2-0 when he latched onto a poorly defended scoop to flick in the rebound.
The Bourda side blasted home two more goals before the half-time whistle through strikes by newcomer Michael Craig and Stuart Gonsalves.
After a slight drizzle, the second half saw a slower pace as the players struggled at times to find their footing. This seemed to play in favour of the Airbenders who managed to secure a few penalty corners but their chances were squandered.
GCC, however, scored two more goals through Trevon Smith and Steven Xavier to secure victory and in the process recorded the largest margin of victory so far in the competition.
Hikers, who had beaten Airbenders in their previous game, remain at the top of the points table with nine points.
GCC joined All Greys on six points each for second position while Old Fort remains on three points. St. Stanislaus and Airbenders round out the pool on zero.
The tournament continues Saturday with Old Fort squaring off with All Greys at Saints ground on Carifesta Avenue starting at 14:30 hours to be followed by a match between current leaders Hikers and Saints Hockey Club at 16:00 hours.
