The International Qaseeda Competition 2012 will be held on April 6 and 8 at the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC).
According to a press release, this year’s event which is being held in collaboration with GT&T is expected to attract scores of overseas visitors. GT&T CEO Yog Mahadeo also committed the company’s annual support, particularly to expand the Muslim cultural programme.
The committee, which comprises representatives from the Muslim Youth League of Guyana, the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman and overseas representatives, says the women’s junior and senior contests will be held on April 6 and the men’s junior and senior on April 8.
Contestants from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, the USA, UK, Canada and Holland have already confirmed their participation. The committee will also host the “Shyaam E Mehfil – Evening of Ghazals” featuring international recording artist Geeta Bisram and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contestant Purnash over on April 7 at 7pm on the lawns of the ACIC. Bisram and Purnash are also expected to appear at the closing ceremony of the Qaseeda contest on April 8.
The release also said the qualifying competition to determine Guyana’s contestants was held two weeks ago and the country is expected to perform in all the categories.
Guyana is expecting strong challenges from Suriname and Holland.
