The Ministry of Health yesterday coordinated a health fair at the Enmore Polyclinic on the East Coast Demerara (ECD), which was observed under the theme ‘Good Health Adds Life to Years’.
The event provided an interactive secession between persons and officials from the various booths. Officials at the booths displayed and handed out brochures on health issues such as diabetic care, HIV and tuberculosis (TB) to those in attendance.
The event provided the opportunity for persons to benefit from the various services available at the polyclinic. The Guyana Red Cross Society for instance, provided the opportunity for persons to access free dental care such as teeth cleaning, filling and extraction.
Among those in attendance were Michael Khan, CEO of the Georgetown Public Hospital, Dr Narine Singh from the Ministry of Health and Dr Beverly Barnett, country representative of the Pan-American Health Organization(PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Members of the community and other nearby villages along with school children made use of the opportunities which were available at the fair. One resident from the nearby village of Golden Grove, Tamika France, said, “I benefit because I had my tooth fill and they were some information on dental care which was very informative.”
Meanwhile, prizes such as pens and lanyards were also given to school children who answered questions correctly during the interactive session.
Ronley Kendall, a representative from the National TB Programme emphasized that “the event is a continuous something that was pioneered by the then minister of health Dr Leslie Ramsammy in observance of World Health Day’’.
World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7 to mark the anniversary of the founding of the WHO in 1948, and is a global campaign to invite everyone to focus on a single health challenge with global impact so as to protect people’s health and well-being.
