A man who unlawfully and maliciously wounded his reputed wife of six months was yesterday fined $15,000 in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court by Magistrate Allan Wilson.
Junior George pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Mellissa Leraux on April 3 at East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Gordon Mansfield said that on April 3 Leraux and George had a misunderstanding at her house and George left. Moments later Leraux was heading to the shop when she was approached by George who dealt her several cuffs and slaps about her face.
Leraux reported the matter to the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost and George was subsequently arrested and charged.
George said that he was drinking around the time of the incident so he was under the influence of alcohol.
Leraux said that she did not want any further issue with George. However, the magistrate told her that if they are only six months into the relationship and he is already abusing her they are not going to last six more weeks.
He also cautioned the man about his conduct, and emphasized that being under the influence of alcohol is no excuse.
