CABOFE flyweight champion Dexter ‘The Kid’ Marques is now scheduled to headline the 22nd edition of the Guyana Fight Night Pro Am card on April 27 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall following the postponement of the initial headliner.
Marques will match gloves with Barbadian Ricardo ‘The Brown Bomber’ Blackman in an eight-round bantamweight bout.
During the contract signing yesterday at the Abdool and Abdool building, it was revealed that the original headline championship bout between local light heavyweight champion Kwesi ‘Lightning Struck Assassin’ Jones and Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese Sean Corbin will be pushed back until next month.
According to executives of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Corbin the former CABOFE light heavyweight champion was unable to keep his ring date after he failed to find a trustworthy caretaker for his business in his absence.
Marques who won his title in February by unanimously defeating journeyman Orlan ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers, has a record of nine wins and two losses. ‘The Kid’ will be using the fight as a warm-up for the lucrative WBC World Cup which boxes off in August.
Meanwhile, Blackman will be looking to return to his winning ways and snap his seven-fight losing streak. ‘The Brown Bomber’s’ abysmal record reads five wins and 12 losses.
The undercard will feature Mandessa Moses matching gloves with Trinidad and Tobago’s Tiana Sosa in a six-round junior lightweight contest. The Moses/Sosa fight was initially billed for last month but due to unforeseen circumstances Sosa was unable to travel.
Guyana’s welterweight champion, Trinidad and Tobago- based Iwan ‘Pure Gold’ Azore will match gloves with Jermaine King in a four-round catch-weight contest, while debutants David Thomas and Anson Green will each look to record their first professional victory when they match gloves in a four-round junior welterweight match-up.
Moses, coming off a lopsided victory over Pauline London last month, will be seeking to improve her seven-win record.
Both Azore and King suffered losses in their previous respective bouts in January and both boxers will be looking to come out with victories. Azore was knocked out in the ninth round by Simeon ‘Candy Man’ Hardy in their bout for the vacant CABOFE title, while King dropped a unanimous decision to Mark Austin.
Azore, who has 14 wins, five losses and three draws, will seek to use his experience against King, while the latter will be fighting for his first professional victory. King has a record of five losses and one draw in his professional career.
The names of the boxers who will make up the amateur segment of the card will be announced subsequently.
The monthly card is an initiative of the GBBC in collaboration with the Sports Ministry and the National Communications Network (NCN).
Sponsors of the event include Digicel, Giftland Office Max, Courts, Banks DIH Limited and ANSA McAl.
Admission is $1,000 while children will be asked to pay half price. Bell time is 20:00 hrs.
