Help for National Library in NA: Overseas-based NGO Council of Friends of New Amsterdam donated a number of books, valued US$4,500, to the New Amsterdam National Library on Saturday. At the presentation ceremony, local representative George Rutherford said the gift was realised after the charity’s secretary Ruthel Fung toured the library during a recent visit here. On her return to the USA, Fung secured the said sum, which was used to purchase 555 books on general education for the library. Rutherford noted that Fung is a former educator who saw the need to boost the library’s collection in order to supplement areas in the school’s curriculum, particularly in the subject areas Science and Mathematics. Librarian Nassem Latiff expressed gratitude on behalf of Chief Librarian Gillian Thompson for the donation. She said the donation will be appreciated by the library’s 6,786 members who live in the East Bank Berbice and Central Corentyne areas. The Council of Friends of New Amsterdam is a broad-based group that networks with individuals, associations, businesses and governmental agencies for the educational, social and economic development of New Amsterdam. In picture: George Rutherford (fourth from left) representatives of the NGO and the NA Library stand next to a display featuring some of the donated books.
