East Coast Demerara used its home ground to great advantage in scoring an upset 1-0 over Berbice in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Under-16 match played Sunday at the Beterverwagting Community Centre ground.
There were also victories for Georgetown and Upper Demerara in weekend matches at Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground and Uitvlugt Community Centre respectively.
East Coast Demerara players combined well but failed to convert on at least five occasions in the first half as the teams remained scoreless at the end of the first half.
Stephen Matthews scored the game’s lone goal in the 64th minute for East Coast.
At GFC ground, Georgetown mauled East Bank Demerara 4-0.
The goal scorers were Rafael Edwards in the 25th minute, Ronaldo Dover 29th, Keith Caires 50th and Jermain Fletcher 55th.
Upper Demerara squeezed past Bartica 2-1 in their clash at Uitvlugt with Shane Luckie scoring a double for the winners while Luciano Narine scored for the mining town.
Several matches will be on this weekend as the tournament continues.
