Pele Football Club secured a 3-1 victory over Buxton United while Victoria Kings and Seawall played to a 1-1 draw in Sunday’s Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League matches played at the Beterverwagting Community Centre ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
National striker Marvin Joseph netted a double as Pele survived early resistance from the East Coast team.
Pele could have taken the lead as early as the 20 minute when Stellon David dribbled the Buxton United goalkeeper Jason Cromwell but his shot went tantalizingly past the goal.
Joseph netted from a penalty kick when Pele captain Travis “Zorro” Grant was brought down in the penalty area in the 38th minute.
Joseph’s shot went to the right of the teenage custodian Cromwell who had earlier played in the East Coast Demerara versus Berbice Under-16 match.
Buxton United equalized on the stroke of half time when Pele goalkeeper Shemroy Arthur failed to gather an aerial ball and found a lurking Kevron Assaye who patted home an easy shot.
Pele went on the offensive in the second half and were rewarded when Joseph scored his second goal after receiving an excellent left side cross in the 50th minute.
Buxton United had a clear chance to equalize in the 60th minute but Derrick Blair’s header missed an open goal after Arthur was left stranded again.
Pele sealed the deal in the 76th minute when Okenie Fraser converted an easy goal.
In the opening match of the double header, Victoria Kings were held to a 1-1 draw by West Demerara team Seawall in a closely fought encounter.
Kirk Warren placed Victoria on the score card in the fifth minute even as the West Demerara team was trying to organize its defence.
However, Seawall fought back gamely and were eventually rewarded when second half substitute Adami Hoyte scored in the 70th minute of play.
BK Western Tigers were also victorious over the weekend when they scored a 1-0 win over Rosignol United at the Blairmont Community Centre ground Saturday.
Ransford Coolridge netted the game’s lone goal in the 26th minute.
Matches in the league will continue this weekend.
Meanwhile, Berbice brushed aside West Demerara 5-2 in the GFF Women’s Inter Sub-Association competition Saturday at Blairmont ground.
Glenlene Schultz and Sacho Loo both scored tow goals each while Maurcia Murray netted the other goal for Georgetown.
Keshanna Hunte scored both goals for West Demerara.
