The casting stages of the 1823 Slave Revolt Monument are winding down, according to the Ministry of Culture, which says completion of the monument is scheduled for well before Emancipation Day this year.
In a press release on Monday, the Ministry said the monument is being cast at a foundry constructed in the compound of the Burrowes School of Art, on Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown. The monument is a product of a Ministry-sponsored competition as part of the official 2011 International Year for People of African Descent (IYPAD) observances.
Prize-winning US-based Guyanese sculptor Ivor Thom’s design was chosen by a specially appointed committee last August from among submissions. The Ministry said Thom, who was responsible for the Damon Monument in Anna Regina, began his work in November after winning the competition, when it was decided that he was qualified and skilled to cast and build the actual monument. It added that a clay model of the monument has been completed and the wax flex mould, from which the final work will be cast in bronze, has been fashioned.
A final decision for the site of the monument is to be made soon, the release added.
