LONDON, England, CMC – West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan has been chosen to lead Leicestershire in the club’s Division Two County clash against Derbyshire starting today.
The right-hander received the nod after regular captain Matthew Hoggard was ruled unfit to play because of a fractured finger.
Sarwan, in his first season with the club, said he was already settled at Leicester and was hoping for positive results over the next few days.
“We are all looking forward to the game at Derbyshire tomorrow and I will use my captaincy experience from the past,” said Sarwan who has led West Indies in four Tests.
“I feel settled here in Leicester and the lads have welcomed me with open arms, so it has been very comfortable. I’m learning all of the time and I’m sure the lads will fully support me and help me while I am captain.
“I’m getting used to the conditions in England, the weather is very miserable at the minute. It is all about getting mentally prepared for the conditions you will face as a batsman.”
Sarwan will lead an injury plagued side for the home game, with Nathan Buck joining his new ball partner Hoggard on the sidelines. Opener Will Jefferson is also recovering from injury and will sit out the game.
Sarwan, who has played 87 Tests and made 5842 runs at an average of 40, made a reserved start to life at Derbyshire earlier this month, scoring 41 and one against Glamorgan at Leicester earlier this month.
