The dead body of a man was found on the Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo Public Road early yesterday morning.
Athanasius Sandy, 62, of Parika Outfall, East Bank Essequibo, was found with injuries to his head around 5:30am and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Sandy, according to his daughter, Tessa Persaud, was last seen alive when he left her sister’s residence at Vergenoegen on Sunday night to make his way home.
He left around 11pm, after spending the day. Persaud said Sandy also drank while there. “Sunday, he went by my sister in Vergenoegen and drink a little and went to sleep and got up around 11pm and said that he had to go home. So, he left but I don’t know what happen after then,” she related.
Persaud told Stabroek News that some time around 7:30am yesterday, a taxi-driver informed her about the death of her father and she immediately went to the scene. A policeman there told her that her father’s body was found in a clump of bushes at the side of the road.
“When I saw him, his face was covered in blood, his nose and mouth was bleeding and his face was covered in dried grass,” she added The grieving woman told this publication that her father had no family or friends in Zeelugt, so she was puzzled about how he ended up being killed there.
When Stabroek News visited the area, there was no indication that an accident had occurred.
There were no visible tyre marks on the road and residents said that they heard no strange noises during the course of the night.
One resident, who asked not to be named, said that there was the possibility that Sandy may have been struck down by a driver who then brought his body and dumped it in the area. The resident also suggested that someone may have beaten him and dumped his body there.
Sandy’s remains are now being stored at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour, awaiting a post-mortem examination scheduled for Wednesday. He is survived by four children.
