A woman was yesterday put on $80,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after being accused of “biting the hand that fed her” when she stole from someone who had purportedly gone to her rescue.
Twenty-year-old Stacy Allen was accused of stealing one television set from Clarence Whitehead on April 21. The court heard that Allen was being afforded temporary accommodation at Whitehead’s place on the day of the incident and he secured his house and went out but upon his return he found the TV missing.
When Allen was confronted she denied the allegations made against her.
Whitehead made it clear to the court that Allen was not living with him. In fact she had an altercation with a young man she was staying with in the street and he put her out. A neighbour who knew that Whitehead was living alone at the time and had enough space to accommodate her asked him to put her up for the night and he obliged.
Whitehead said that on the day in question after going out he returned to find the defendant and his television missing.
Allen gave her mother’s address as her place of abode which is in ‘C’ Field Sophia. There were no objections to bail from Police Prosecutor Sergeant Lionel Harvey but he asked for conditions to be imposed and that the amount of bail be substantial.
Allen was ordered to report to Constable Chapman on Friday and her next court appearance is set for April 30.
