$100,000 bail for gold chain larceny accused

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday placed Sherwin Ken on $100,000 bail when he pleaded not guilty to a larceny from the person charge in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that Ken on Tuesday stole from the person of Shivraj Boodram, one gold chain valued $140,000.

According to the particulars of the case read by Prosecutor Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey,  on the day in question Boodram was exiting a bus wearing his chain when he felt it being pulled and then he saw the defendant grabbing his chain.

The defendant snatched the  chain and ran off but Boodram gave chase and alerted police in the area who apprehended the defendant.

Attorney George Thomas made an application for bail on behalf of the defendant.

He stated that his client had met all the important criteria for  bail and was also willing to abide by the condition of reporting to the Brickdam Police Station if bail was granted in a reasonable sum.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds of the prevalence of the offence and also argued that the address given can allow the defendant to go out of the court’s jurisdiction since he supplied a West Bank Demerara address.

The magistrate, however, granted bail with conditions and Ken has to return to court on May 2.
