The Youth Coalition for Transfor-mation (YCT) says that the administration has insulted the Guyanese people with its refusal to discipline the former Police Commissioner Henry Greene.
The YCT said in a press release that it was dismayed by reports that Greene offered to retire from his post as Police Commissioner and noted that since allegations of rape were leveled against him, the YCT together with other organizations had been calling for him to be disciplined.
According to the YCT, what occurred instead is that government proved in its action that it does not take women’s issues very seriously.
“We also cannot forgive the women in the PPP/C government, especially Human Services Minister Jennifer Webster, on their failure to address the issue, not from a political standpoint but from that as women,” the YCT said.
And while noting the comments on the Greene issue by Education Minister Priya Manickchand, the YCT remarked that “it seemed a little too late in coming.”
Meanwhile, the YCT said it is again calling on the government to put aside politics and deal with the business of the people.
“We are asking you to treat our women as equals, to ensure that the rights of our women are protected and that acts of abuse against women are thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators are brought to justice,” the YCT urged.
The YCT also called on Guyanese “to stand with us as we fight for justice for our sister. Some of us might not know her personally, but nonetheless we have come to admire her, for her bravery, strength and moral courage she has demonstrated over the last few months in her search for justice.”
YCT added that it will not let up on its calls for justice for this woman and any other who has been abused.
The YCT also contended that Greene’s form of departure from the Police Force with all of his retirement benefits cannot be viewed as a victory but as an insult.
“Evidently, there is no justice for the victim whilst Mr. Greene is expected to enjoy a retirement package at the expense of Guyanese taxpayers who must be outraged at his misconduct and poor performance as a Police Commissioner,” the YCT charged.
