Bandits beat, rob Corentyne technician in home invasion

A network technician of Hampshire, Corentyne was terrorised and robbed of a small amount of cash, cell phones and jewellery when armed, masked bandits struck at his home on Tuesday.

Deokumar ‘Vishaul’ Bisnauth, 26, who is attached to the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T), in New Amsterdam, was hit several times to the face with a small gun carried by one of the men.

He recalled that around 7pm, he was sitting at a table outside doing some work for the company and went inside for some papers when he heard a car stop. Thinking it was his wife, Shavan Bisnauth and an overseas-based relative, Anjanie Ramsaroop, who had both gone to the mandir, he did not suspect anything was amiss.

It was only after he sat down again to continue his work that the bandits “appeared in front of me. They took away the phone and pointed the gun to my face.”

The bandits stripped him of his diamond ring and a silver chain he was wearing then placed him to lay face-down on a bed in the bottom-flat. They also and robbed him of his BlackBerry smartphone along with $12,000 that was in his wallet and his wife’s LG phone. Bisnauth recalled that the bandits then took him upstairs and where they found Ramsaroop’s iPhone, her diamond bracelet and a gold and silver chain.

The bandits kept hitting him as they demanded more money and jewellery but he insisted that he did not know where they were kept. They ransacked the entire place but could not find any more valuables.

They brought Bisnauth back to the lower flat and searched it again in vain. He recounted that they continued to hit him and ordered him to lay face-down, this time on the ground as they escaped. Neighbours saw the men running out of the yard and through the street in the direction of New Amsterdam. They suspected that the car was waiting to pick them up.

According to Bisnauth, the incident lasted for about six minutes. He said the police who were on patrol arrived promptly and he “appreciated the quick response.”
