No.70 Young Star and Shieldstown both won their last 16 play-off matches over the weekend to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2011 New Building Society Second Division 40-Over Cricket Competition.
In their play-offs against Kim-Il-Sung of Corriverton at the No.70 Ground; No. 70 Young Star won the toss, batted firstand with Thameshwar Ramoutar slamming 70 (5×4, 3×6), Chatrapaul Lionel 69 (8×4, 3×6) and Rayon Yacoob (50), they totaled 258 for 6 in their 40 overs. Bowling for Kim-Il-Sung, off spinner Amzan Appalsammy took 3 for 20.
When Kim-Il-Sung replied, Jeremy Moore made 44 and Eric Phillips 26 as they struggled to 159 all out in 33.1 overs to give No. 70 Young Star victory by 99 runs. Off spinner Naeem Yacoob took 4 for 16 and pacer Chris Bollers, 3 for 37.
In the other play-off at the Shieldstown Ground in West Berbice, Shieldstown beat West Canje of Lochaber by 6 wickets. West Canje, winning the toss and electing to bat first in the match which was reduced to 25 overs-a-side contest due to a rain-affected playing area, were bundled out for 78 in 23.1 overs with Wahab Edoo top scoring with 21.
Bowling for Shieldstown off-spinner, Aftar Gani, took 4 for 4 from 4.1 and pacer Riaz Imam 2 for 7 from 5 overs and medium pacer, Andrew Joynauth 2 for 13 from 5 overs.
With adequate contributions from their batsmen, Dr. Zulfiqar Bux (15) and Rayan Yacoob and Altaf Khan (13 each), Shieldstown did not have much trouble in replying with 79 for 4 in 18.5 overs. Bowling for West Canje, off spinner Adrian Busjith took 2 for 13.
