A 12-year-old Craig Primary School student sustained head injuries among others after he was yesterday afternoon struck down by a Linden-Soesdyke minibus along the East Bank while he was crossing the road.
Mohamed ‘Kevin’ Ramnarine, of Lot 37 ‘C’ Dam, Friendship, East Bank Demerara, was flung some ten feet away after being hit by the bus which was at the time transporting passengers to Georgetown.
According to the boy’s aunt, Naz (only name given), she was standing in front of her Friendship home with her daughter talking with the lad sometime after 5pm. She said after a few minutes, she watched him walk away while holding his bicycle and turned away as he prepared to cross the busy roadway.
The woman said she later heard a loud impact and when she looked around, she saw her nephew skating towards the opposite end of the road. She said that she was left in a state of a shock and could not bear to get a closer look at the child who was left motionless. She returned to her yard where she screamed for help.
Her daughter on the other hand, she said, immediately ran over to the unconscious boy and held him as she wailed loudly. Persons who had gathered around him hurriedly had him put into a vehicle.
While the bus which was involved in the accident remained parked, another minibus pulled over and offered assistance in transporting the child to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. From there, he was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where up to press time he was being treated by doctors.
Relatives at the hospital explained that the child would be required to have a head scan. Also, the boy’s brother, Javed Ramnarine, told this newspaper that his right knee appeared to have been twisted.
Meanwhile, the driver of the minibus was said to be in custody at the Grove Police Station assisting with investigations.
