Two men are in custody after sticking up a cop at Crab Island Public Road, Berbice after he had picked them up at Ogle.
Police today said that at about 2115h last night, the Police Constable, who was not named, was driving a motor car along Crab Island Public Road, Berbice, with the two men whom he had picked up at Ogle.
A police release said that one of the men requested that the vehicle stop in order for him to urinate, during which the other man who was in the rear seat, pulled out a knife and held up the policeman.
“The Constable reacted and managed to discharge rounds from his service pistol which caused the man outside to run away. At the same time, the policeman accelerated the vehicle, but lost control and crashed into a concrete structure which left him in a dazed state”, the release said.
Police said that during this, the man who was still in the vehicle took away the rank’s service firearm and escaped into the nearby bushes.
The police said that the man who had run away earlier was subsequently arrested by the police in the vicinity of the Berbice Harbour Bridge. At about 1410h today, the other suspect was apprehended among the bushes at Crab Island by the police and the firearm recovered.
