The Guyana Heritage Society would like to express its delight and appreciation for the recent restoration work that was done to Austin House on Main Street, Georgetown.
Preservation of the architectural heritage is considered a fundamental issue in the life of modern societies (International Journal of Architectural Heritage). In addition to their historical interest, cultural heritage buildings are valuable because they contribute significantly to the economy by providing key attractions in a context where tourism and leisure are major industries in these times. The need for preserving historical constructions is thus not only a cultural requirement, but also an economic demand.
Our local heritage is in dire need of preservation as over the years building by building it is being sold, left to rot or just demolished for business purposes. We would like to say to other owners of such beautiful heritage buildings that they take this as a wonderful example of how to preserve our local architectural heritage.
