Two men who allegedly robbed a policeman of a pistol and matching rounds, property of the Guyana Police Force, as he was moonlighting as a taxi driver, were remanded to prison following their appearance at the New Amsterdam Court on Wednesday.
The duo, Shawn Wood, called ‘Tall Man’, 36, of Sophia, East Coast Demerara, and Andrew Davis, known as ‘Fat Man’, 25, of Lot 3026 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, have been charged also with attempting to commit a felony, to wit robbery of a motorcar valued $2M.
A third person, Marlon D’Andrade, of Limlair Village, Corentyne, is facing two counts of aiding and abetting the duo in the commission of the offences on May 3 at Palmyra Village.
Wood and Davis hired Prem Narine, who happened to be a policeman who was then moonlighting as a taxi driver, to
transport them from Georgetown to East Berbice.
However, shortly after they crossed the Berbice River Bridge the men requested that the driver stop the car to pick up their alleged accomplice who was waiting along the roadway.
It was during this period that the duo allegedly being armed with a knife robbed Narine of the 9mm pistol and eight matching rounds which belonged to the Guyana Police Force. The gun and ammunition were valued at $187,200.
During the incident, ranks on mobile patrol were alerted and assisted in arresting the trio. The stolen articles were recovered.
Objecting to pre-trial liberty, Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, told Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo that should bail be granted the defendants may not attend their trial as they live out of the jurisdiction.
The matter is fixed for hearing on May 21 for the Preliminary Inquiry.
