Enthusiastic followers of Guyana’s newest cricket format, 10/10 softball are set for an exciting day when the third edition of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) sponsored competition concludes tomorrow at the Providence Stadium.
Four matches are scheduled for the day and the opening match will see Unstoppables taking on Rockaway Auto Sales ‘A’ in the male third place playoff.
Secondly, for the first time in the tournament’s history an International Cup match will be played between Guyana and Canada 10/10 sides and there’s a whopping $1 million up for the taking. Thirdly, action in the female finals will be between 4R Lioness and Trophy Stall Angels.
Finally there will be the expected grudge match in the male finals between defending champion Wolf Warriors and Regal XI. Just last week Saturday the two premier softball teams in the country locked horns in the final of the Hadi’s/City Mall softball final in which Wolf Warriors came out triumphant.
During a press conference yesterday morning at the GT&T headquarters on Hadfield Street, Chief Executive Officer Yog Mahadeo said he fully expects patrons to have an enjoyable day of cricket and he offered the enticement that there would be a special surprise in store for the fans.
“As was the case in previous years lucky fans at the venue have a chance to win many giveaways, including millions of dollars in credit, the final draw and hand over of the fan’s SUV vehicle.
So I’m encouraging all my Guyanese brothers and sisters to be present at Providence on Saturday as much is in store for them,” Mahadeo declared.
He also highlighted that during the course of the game as is the case with the lucrative Indian Premier League T20 tournament, in-game interaction between players, fans and various GT&T affiliates will also be done.
Mahadeo further noted that GT&T is very proud of what it has been able to accomplish in recent years via events like this, thereby enabling many young talents from across the country to be found, despite the significant costs.
“We at GT&T are proud of our investments in such competitions because at the end of the day we are seeing the worth behind investing in our fellow Guyanese brothers and sisters.
Whether it is sports, singing, etc. we are pleased with the outcome of all those various types of events we have had.”
Coordinator of this year’s tournament and GT&T’s Senior Systems Analyst Richard Sukhdeo said he was pleased with the way this year’s tournament has gone to date, especially in the knockout stages in recent weeks and he was particularly pleased with how the females have played.
GT&T’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Royston Rachpaul concluded by stating that over $50M was budgeted for this year’s tournament which has touched over 13,000 persons across Guyana, including in remote and outlying areas such as Essequibo, Port Kaituma, Lethem, and Corentyne, to name a few.
Entertainment on the day will be piloted by Kerwin Bollers of Hits and Jams Entertainment and he told the media briefing that those present will be able to witness an all-Guyanese performance line-up.
Gates will be opened from 12:00pm tomorrow and the first ball is expected to be bowled at 2:00pm. The entrance fee is $1,500 and according to the organizers that comes with a GT&T jersey.
