The Eve Leary Sports Club ground will come alive this Sunday with the World Athletics Day Championship starting from 09:00hrs.
The World Athletics Day Championship is a competition where only schoolchildren are allowed to participate and the age categories are under-16 and under-18.
In the under-16 category athletes will be able to participate in two events, one track and one field, while in the under-18 category athletes will only be able to compete in one event, whether it is a track or field event.
With the events slated to bring young talent to the fore, Jevina Sampson of the Running Brave Athletics Club is expected to headline the event, especially after a two-month layoff from all national competition due to quadriceps injuries.
However, in her short absence from the track Tirana Mitchell has come to the fore running equivalent times to that of Sampson while Natricia Hooper has starred in the 400 metres.
Meanwhile on the men’s side Tevin Garraway is expected to be dominant in the sprint events, the 100 and 200 metres, as he has been throughout the year so far.
The event will allow for intense competition among the youth, especially between Mitchell and Sampson.
The clash between the two youth athletes who are cousins has been anticipated since the rise of Mitchell.
Awards will be given to athletes who place first to third in both the under-16 and under-18 categories.
Entries will close today for these athletes at Olympic House in Kingston.
