Dear Editor,
On Sunday, May 13, Guyana will be celebrating Mothers Day, and mothers will be pampered, praised by family and friends, et al.
However, I wish to refer to another set of mothers – those who have passed on and whom we also still celebrate and reflect on, but in a different way. As Poet Khalil Gibran says: “He who loses his mother loses a pure soul who blesses and guards him constantly.”
For the past decade or longer I have been lamenting my inability to visit the gravesite (Le Repentir) of my parents, where on Mothers Day it would have been a time for quiet reflection by one whose love is still alive. The tomb would have been repainted and decorated with flowers, and there would be similar things done by many in other parts of the cemetery.
Today the cemetery still remains impassable, and though some attempt was made to tidy it up a few months ago, this was not sustained. However, SN reported on May 10 of a “Rescue Georgetown” meeting with the M&CC and partners. I note that a representative of a funeral parlour is on board, and would hope that Le Repentir is restored to what it used to be.
Congratulations to all mothers; on this day they are special.
Yours faithfully,
V O Patrick
