Relatives of the man accused of murdering a Trinidad teen say they are still being terrorized by a caller from the island and they again appealed to the suspect to turn himself in.
Stabroek News yesterday spoke to Dhanwantie Sookram, the mother of Ramesh ‘Alvin’ Sookram, 25, who said that she is being tormented by a man who identified himself as a relative of the murdered teen during one of his many phone calls.
“Whole day yesterday (Saturday) he calling and saying that he coming and kill me, meh husband, meh daughter, meh sons and meh daughters-in-law. Them even seh them gon kill de three grandchildren I have and bury we in seven grave at Soesdyke,” the woman said.
She further stated that the majority of the calls were made on a private number but on two occasions, the number registered as 18687671778. “If you hear how he cuss me nasty, nasty. He de call around 8 yesterday (Friday) and say that 12 o’clock we gon die. We aint sleep in we house how me fraid. Then this morning (Saturday morning) he call and ask wa mek you aint sleep home, how de people come last night and me nah went. I tell he after you threaten me I go away and he say this is not a threat, he will come and cut meh behind meh foot, meh hand, slit meh throat and bore me seven times in me belly,” she explained.
Sookram is the main suspect in the brutal murder of 18-year-old Nikita Ramischand, the daughter of Prominent Guyana-born attorney, Odai Ramischand. Nikita is believed to have been ambushed on April 25 while walking to her mother’s salon which is situated in the compound of their LP 46 Maracas Royal Road, Maracas, St. Joseph, Trinidad and Tobago home. She was reportedly dragged behind the premises and stabbed to her abdomen. Her bloodied body was discovered behind the salon at about 8pm. An autopsy revealed that the teenager bled to death after her throat was slit. She also suffered six stab wounds to the abdomen.
Dhanwantie said she is very afraid for her life and that of her entire family, adding that her sons have not been to work nor has her 12-year-old daughter attended school since the ordeal began. She affirmed that she has not left her home in an effort to protect herself from any further harassment.
“I want to say again that I am not hiding from the police. I fraid of the man from Trinidad that calling and saying he coming to kill me. Me frighten… it is very hard on me, my husband and the rest of my children,” she reiterated.
The distressed mother stated that she has since visited the Timehri Police Station but a report was not taken. She explained that police had told her that the phone calls can be made by anyone and as a result, a statement would not be necessary. She noted that she intends on visiting a police station in Georgetown with the hope of her matter being taken more seriously.
“These people fail to understand that we weren’t in Trinidad. Is three years now this boy living there away from us. We don’t know anything, Ow, please, please leh he turn himself in. I can’t do this anymore,” she cried.
“I aint know where he (Ramesh) deh. He aint contacting me on meh phone. I will turn him in myself if I know where he deh. I promise everyone I will turn him in if I de know, I promise,” Dhanwantie said.
On Friday, Dhanwantie had said that men who said that they were police had gone to her home and beaten one of her sons while seeking information on Ramesh.
