Manchester United’s star Mexican striker Javier Hernandez has been pulled out of Mexico 2012 Summer Olympic football squad following a request from Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson.
According to the British newspaper, Daily Mail and other sports media in the country over the weekend, the 23-year-old striker was initially selected as one of Mexico’s three over-aged players for the qualifiers and was even touted as the nation’s flag bearer for the July 27 Opening Ceremony.
The Mail further reporter that Ferguson raised concerns that Hernandez, who has struggled to emulate his stunning debut season, would be shy of the 28 days rest he requires his players to take during the season should he feature at the qualifiers.
The Mail and other media organizations, however, reported that although he would not be part of the Olympic team, Hernandez will play in Mexico’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers at the beginning of June, which opens with a fixture versus Guyana on June 8.
Media personnel from Televisa Deportes, who was in Guyana earlier this year, had told this newspaper that although he expects Hernandez to play in the Guyana game, he could not be sure at that stage.
Early April the Golden Jaguars received a boost with the news that Costa Rican captain Bryan Ruiz of English Premier League side Fulham, was effectively ruled out of the just-concluded English domestic season and potentially out of the Costa Rica side which visits Guyana June 12.
Ruiz is suffering from a broken foot and, according to a BBC report in April is not expected to be healed until mid June or early July.
