Wolf Warriors and 4R Lioness were bitten in the finals of the third annual Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Limited nationwide 10/10 softball cricket tournament which climaxed Saturday night at the Providence National Stadium losing to Regal and Trophy Stall Angels respectively
Wolf Warriors went into Saturday night’s final as the defending champions having won the tournament last year, but the West Demerara side slumped to a shock defeat as Regal played regally to snatch the title with a six wicket triumph.
A crowd of just under 10,000 persons watched as Wolf Warriors, batting first, posted 77-6 with skipper Amerith Rai, 28, Vishnu Tannechandra 12 and Yougister Bachan, 11, the principal scorers.
Ayume Mohammed picked up 2-15 while Troy Kippins, Balram Roopram, and Ricky Sargeant ended with a wicket each.
Regal, in reply, reached 78-4 with Mohammed crowning a fine all round performance with the top score of 28 while Chien Gittens made 25.
Despite the seemingly comfortable victory, Regal was made to work hard for the win especially in the last over when a wicket fell but they managed to scrape home despite the hiccup.
Like the male final, the female final was also another low-scoring affair before Trophy Stall Angels triumphed by 18 runs.
Batting first the “Angels” scored 87-2 from their allotted 10 overs with skipper June Ann Ogle’s purple patch, which has seen her being unbeaten in each of her four previous knocks, continuing.
Ogle was not out again but this time on 47, falling three runs short of another half century. She received support from Kantra Yadram, 15 and Monica Seales, 14.
In reply, 4R Lioness crashed to 69 all out with Shameeza Williams making 22 and Lashauna Toussaint,14.
In the male Open, third place play-off, Unstoppables were stopped by Rockaway Auto Sales `A’ team which triumphed by 41 runs. Batting first, Rockaway Auto Sales `A’ made 117-4 from their 10 overs with Kumar Bishundial blasting the topscore of 61 while Rushie Samaraoo chipped in with a cameo knock of 29.
Chasing the formidable total, Unstoppables were stopped cold ending on 76-8 after 10 overs. Vinod Nandkishore’s 23 wqas the topscore while Surendra Sookdeo made 12.
And, the third placed female Open category, Mike’s Wellwoman beat Rising Stars by nine wickets.
Rising Stars, batting first crawled to 88-8 with Extras the main contributor with 24 while Manthana Cambridge made 20.
Mike’s Wellwoman in reply raced to 89-1 in 9.3 overs with Onkia Wallerson making 46 and Joann Van Sertima, 33 not out.
In the specially arranged invitational match between Guyana and Canada, the Guyanese won by 48 runs.
Batting first the Guyana Select XI scored 111-7 with Surujpaul Deosarran topscoring with 38 off 20 balls while Sharmendra Hardyal chipped in with 14.
Canada, in reply, reached 69-7 when the overs ran out.
They were indebted to former Guyana player Troy Gonsalves who made 42 but with his dismissal, the side collapsed and the Guyanese ran out comfortable winners.
The win earned the Guyana Select XI US$5000.
