Nikkoloi Smith threw down two thunderous dunks on his way to a triple-double as he led Plaisance Academy to a routing of St. Rose’s High School that ended 78-15 as the YBG Inter Schools competition continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Sunday evening.
Smith, who was a part of the Inter-Guiana Games squad last year, seemed in good rhythm as he penetrated the shaky defence of St. Rose’s easily on his way to 25 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals.
Nicholas Cassius, 19 points, along with Nduka Horatio, 14 points and 10 rebounds, only seemed to widen the talent gap between the two teams.
St. Rose’s were unable to get anything going especially against the stifling 2-3 zone defense played by Plaisance, as the high school shot less than 20 percent from the field.
Rashad Hussain (with three points and six rebounds) was the player on the St Rose’s team with the only outstanding stat line which made no difference in the lopsided game.
Meanwhile, Marian Academy downed President’s College (PC) 55-43 extending their winning streak to four games.
While Marian never trailed in the game, PC did not stay quiet as they always seemed in with a chance by making some runs in the game.
However, Marian’s systematic approach was able to overcome PC, especially stopping the low post beast from PC in Nyamebekeyre Bacchus who ended with five points and seven rebounds.
Dominic Vincente led the way with 19 points for Marian, penetrating the defense easily while initiating a number of fast break points while Ruel Ritch dished out a game-high six assists for Marian to go along with his 10 points.
Devon Warren had 11 points for PC while Durvash Roopnarine scored eight points hitting two threes at the end of the game.
Queen’s College earlier suffered the horrid fate of last week as they blew an eight-point lead in the second half to lose by one point to the Government Technical Institute (GTI) 46-47.
Team captain of GTI Dwight Gray dropped 12 points while grabbing 10 rebounds while Drexel Amsterdam scored 10 points for GTI.
QC allowed a lot of second chance points while not scoring after GTI committed numerous turnovers throughout the game.
Akil Lewis had 13 points and nine rebounds while Kareem Critchlow chipped in with 14 points and eight steals for the nation’s top rated government school.
The Georgetown Conference will head into its semifinal stage this Sunday as the first section of the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) School tournament comes to a close.
