National chess champion Taffin Khan last Saturday snatched the lead from his father David with a convincing victory as the Caribbean Container Incorporated FIDE rating tournament continued at the Ocean Spray Hotel.
National champion Taffin Khan unleashed a relentless attack on his opponent’s King which was forced to roam the board seeking a safe position.
Not finding one, David Khan was forced to sacrifice his Queen in an attempt to stave off the inevitable checkmate but the sacrifice only worsened his position and he ultimately resigned after 30 moves.
Taffin and his father were contesting the key six round clash which left the younger Khan as the sole leader of the competition with five points.
Meanwhile, national junior champion Haifeng Su won his match with fellow junior player Anthony Drayton but Su is still behind junior player Cecil Cox who is leading among the juniors.
The points standings after six rounds read: Taffin Khan 5.5, David Khan and Cecil Cox 5 apiece, Shiv Nandalall 4, Anthony Drayton 3.5, Haifeng Su 3, Ryan Singh 1.5, Kana Khan and Ron Motilall one apiece and Sham Khan 0.5.
The six junior players are up against four FIDE rated seniors to obtain ratings. The World Chess Federation (FIDE) will grant the ratings based on the younger players’ performance in the tournament. The remaining three rounds are scheduled to be played this weekend. Round seven will take place on Saturday from 16:30 hrs at the Ocean Spray Hotel, while rounds eight and nine and the presentation of prizes are set for Olympic House the following day. (IW)
