(Trinidad Express) A security guard is expected to be charged with the beating of former beauty queen, Candice Worrell.
The Chaguanas man, who was arrested during a police exercise on Wednesday, is expected to appear before a Chaguanas magistrate on Monday.
The arrest was made near the suspect’s home in Chaguanas two weeks after Worrell’s mother, Susan, made a tearful plea for police to find her daughter’s attackers.
Mrs Worrell wanted to know why her daughter’s case was not given the same priority as the stabbing death of 18-year-old Nikita Ramischand, daughter of prominent attorney, Odai Ramischand.
The suspect, who works at a casino, slipped out of the country after Worrell was attacked on January 20. He returned from Guyana recently.
The exercise was led by Superintendent Johnny Abraham and included Inspector Wayne Lawrence and police constables from the Central Division Task Force.
Police said the man was wanted for a similar incident in Chaguanas.
Worrell, a health and safety officer, was robbed and beaten at her John Street, Chaguanas workplace on January 20. She is engaged to W Connection Football Club captain Jan-Michael Williams. The couple have a one-year-old daughter, Naveah.
Susan Worrell said her 29-year-old daughter had already left her workplace when she remembered she left her cellphone at the office. She returned to the building where she was badly beaten on the head.
“Workers from a company downstairs heard her screams and ran to help her. But the suspect had already escaped,” she said.
Candice Worrell, 29, was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility and then transferred to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. She was then moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the St Clair Medical Centre.
“She is no longer in critical condition. She is stable. My daughter is not conscious and she is not talking, but she is progressing,” Worrell said.
Candice Worrell represented this country at the 2009 Miss Tourism Queen International in China and is a fashion model.
