Christopher Franklyn might not have been called to trials ahead of this year’s Caribbean table tennis championships but the runner up to Godfrey Munroe in the men’s singles of the 2010 national championships still seems to have what it takes to get past the present crop of youngster.
Competing Thursday night at the Malteenoes Sports Club in a specially arranged Open competition sponsored by Wartsila, Franklyn turned back the challenge of young Edinho Lewis winning 4-2 in the final.
The win was worth $25,000 put more importantly it sent a subtle message to the GTTA selection panel that the young brigade is just not ready.
But for a while it seemed as if an upset was in the making as Lewis reeled off the first two games winning 11-8, 11-8.
But after the feeling out process was completed Franklyn went to work and won the next four games 11-3, 11-6, 11-3, 11-2.
In the semi-finals Franklyn defeated Chelsea Edghill, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 while Lewis got the better of young Kevon Corbin 11-3, 11-3, 11-6.
Overseas-based player Paul David, who is in the country, national champion Nigel Bryan, veteran Colin France and a number of other top players failed to participate in the tournament.
