Workers at Enmore Sugar Estate yesterday began strike action after a letter was sent from GuySuCo to the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) stating that it would be unable to pay the workers their ‘back pay’.
According to reports, the workers of Enmore estate said that the strike will continue until they are assured that they will be paid what they deserve.
Narine said that he has not been fully updated on the issue at Enmore Estate and will be unable to provide any information as to the Union’s stance on the issue so he will have to be contact after he had been briefed by his field officers.
However the worker will continue the strike today.
Meanwhile, at the Wales Estate strike action has concluded while management and GAWU are still negotiating according to GAWU General Secretary Seepaul Narine.
The Wales strike was sparked after GuySuCo proposed a change in the beginning of the working day from 6 am to 7 am of approximately 70 mechanical tillage workers.
Wales Estate Manager Devindra Kumar said workers have resumed work at the proposed time of 7 am and things have returned to normalcy. He added that the issue is being dealt at the central level with the involvement of the Ministry of Labour.
