(Trinidad Express) Two media workers — a crime reporter and a cameraman — were among four people arrested on Sunday night, minutes after they allegedly robbed an Arouca businessman of more than TT$300,000.
Following the alleged robbery, and in their bid to escape, one of the other men, a security officer, was shot in the foot by officers attached to the Arouca Criminal Investigations Department (CID) after he pointed a gun in the direction of the officers police said.
Investigators said, at around 7.20 p.m., the men went to K&A Liquor Mart located at Range Road, Five Rivers, and identified themselves as police officers.
The men reportedly informed the owner of the businessplace that they were in possession of a warrant to search the establishment.
The owner, police said, granted them access to the building before they pointed firearms at him and announced a hold-up before robbing him of TT$185,807 and an additional US$28,067 along with nine bottles of Johnnie Walker Black Scotch Whisky valued at TT$2,700.
Acting on information received, officers said they went to the establishment where they noticed a man sitting in a vehicle which was parked to the front of the building. The three others were in the process of exiting the establishment before being challenged by the officers.
It was then that the security officer allegedly pointed his gun at the police before the lawmen opened fire, hitting him in the foot.
He was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope where up to yesterday he remained warded under police guard.
The other three were arrested and taken to the Arouca Police Station and were being placed on identification parades up to yesterday evening.
Police said all of the cash and alcohol were recovered from inside the vehicle which was also impounded at the station. Also recovered were two nine-millimetre pistols and six rounds of ammunition, police said.
