Guyana’s world-ranked squash player Nicolette Fernandes on Sunday defeated Deon Saffery of Wales by three sets to two (3-2) in the final of the WISPA International Squash Tournament in Guatemala. Nicolette won 6-11, 11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 11-6. It was the first tournament Fernandes has played since October of last year when she won the bronze medal at the Pan-Am Games in Mexico.
At those championships, Fernandes sustained a severe shoulder injury which had sidelined her for the past six months. She will compete next in the Mexico Open in Mexico City from May 24-27.
