Residents of Kwakwani (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice) are this morning protesting the proposed appointment of an interim body for their Neighbourhood Democratic Council.
Local Government officials are in the community conducting an inquiry into the NDC, however residents say that the notice aired on TV in Linden stated that all residents were invited to a public meeting.
Residents said that the venue, the NDC’s office, Kwakwani Park was not suited for the meeting. They turned up at the office bearing placards denouncing the planned installation of an interim body.
Following strong objections to the venue of the inquiry, residents stormed the office to prove it was inadequate to accommodate all them.
The Ministry of Local Government has embarked upon a series of inquiries into Neighbourhood Democratic Councils with the intention of deciding whether they should be replaced. At several of these inquiries residents have objected to plans to change the NDCs. The ministry’s move has been interpreted in some quarters as politically motivated and with the intention of installing councilors friendly to the ruling party.
