Market vendor on ganja trafficking charge

A 43-year-old Kiskadee Drive resident is now on remand after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a narcotics charge.

Roden Hurry heard that he on May 19, 2012 at Water Street, Georgetown had in his possession 110 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Upon pleading not guilty to the charge Hurry opted to make an application for bail which was objected to by police prosecutor Sergeant Lionel Harvey.

Harvey stated that his facts differ from the claim of the defendant. He says that according to police facts, on the day in question police went into the defendant’s stall located in the Stabroek Market and carried out a search and a black bag with a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems were found. Also, no special reason was given for bail to be granted which the law stipulates must be present.

Hurry was refused bail and told to return to court on May 23, 2012.
